Active Holidays - The New Black

By: Jennifer Sheen

The face of tourism is changing and the good old beach holiday may soon become a thing of the past due to concerns over skin cancer and the aging effects of the sun. The average worker spends 49 weeks of the year on the job leaving only 21 precious days of free time every year; time that should be spent wisely.

Sigrid Bastien works as a professor in Germany. “I don’t have much spare time because work is so consuming. There are so many thing I want to do and when I do get a holiday I like to make the most of it! .This year I have decided to learn Spanish in Spain for two weeks. Next year – scuba diving in the Caribbean! ¨

Sigrid is not alone. Recent reports have shown that travel agencies are a experiencing a major increase in bookings for active holidays. Many clients are taking holidays which involve learning a new skill or bettering themselves in some way.
Golfing, walking and skiing holidays continue to be popular but travel companies are now offering increasingly specialised vacations to their list. Diverse activities such as riding a dog sled in the Antarctic or volunteering in an Orphanage in Africa are now commonplace.

Language courses abroad are becoming increasingly popular because they offer a ready made social scene and a combination of learning, sightseeing and partying. Languages are increasingly important in today's climate and a good grasp can be gained on a two week, total immersion course.

The message? A lot can be achieved in two weeks and when time is of the essence one should use it wisely!
