Choosing the Best Youth Hostel in Barcelona

By: Sanchez Lanfor

One of the great traditions of European travel is the youth hostel. These are places to stay that offer special prices to young people of student age (usually between 18 and 30). They can be found all throughout Europe and usually offer a great deal for accommodations, with prices ranging from $15 to $40, depending on where you go and what kind of room you want.

Most youth hostels offer what they call dormitory rooms that sleep two, four, six, 12, 14, or 16 people. You can book at once with a group of friends, or you can opt to take your chances. Some hostels do offer private rooms, and many offer girls' and boys' dormitories separately. However, you will get the best prices if you agree to sleep in a mixed dormitory room for 14 or 16 people.

The majority of youth hostels offer safes or lockers for you to keep your belongings in (no one wants to haul a backpack to a nightclub). Some offer them for free, and others require a payment for the lockers. Many youth hostels now offer heated water and air-conditioned comfort during the summer. Here are some of Barcelona's best bets for youth hostels.

1. Ideal Youth Hostel is truly ideal because of its prized location. It stands near the Barcelona city center, close to the Ramblas boulevard, famous for its activities and is right next to the Opera House. Breakfast is included in the price. It has a 24 hour reception desk and a common room. You are free to come home any time since there are no restrictions on timings. You will get free Internet access for your laptop. This is also one the least expensive youth hostels in Barcelona.

2. Alberg Juvenil Palua: This youth hostel is conveniently located in the Barri Gotic section near Ramblas and the Barcelona city center. It has an extensive bike parking and free lockers facility. There are kitchen facilities and the breakfast is included in price. A large common room with a TV add up to the perks of the hostel.

3. INOUT Hostel. One of the lower priced hostels in the city, the INOUT offers a great deal. It is located further from Barcelona, and requires a 25-minute ride to Ramblas. However, there is much to be desired, despite its seemingly remote location. The hostel is located in Collserola Park.

Collserola Park features 25 hectares of forests, gardens, and sports fields. You can order a picnic basket and homemade tomato bread in the hostel. If you want to go to the city or the country you can take any one of the various organized trips. Or you can take the hostel messenger boat to Barcelona's famous beaches.

These youth hostels provide many options for young travelers to see a little of Barcelona. If you choose a youth hostel wisely, you can enjoy a stay in Barcelona and have enough money to spend on seeing Barcelona, rather than spending it all on a room you never see.
