Grand Theater of Havana: a majestic piece of art…

By: Jose Mauricio

In the old part of Havana City there is a building that will impress you with only one look. It is located just in front of Central Park and next to the National Capitol. It is simply a jewel of the Cuban architecture placed in a special spot of the city: the Grand Theater of Havana.

The Grand Theatre of Havana is one of the most important cultural institutions in Latin America. It possesses halls for plays, for concerts, for conferences and video exhibitions as well as galleries of visual arts, a choral center, and several rehearsal halls for groupings of any kind of dancing.

The most important of its spaces is the García Lorca Hall, formerly denominated Great Theatre Tacon which had its first presentations on November, 1837, and the official inauguration on April, 1838. An active theatre from then on in whose stage important companies and most significant figures of the universal art have paraded, it is still full of life. The dancers Anna Pavlova and Alicia Alonso, the actresses Sarah Bernhart and Eleonora Dusse, the sopranos Adelina Patti and Victoria of the Ángeles, the tenor Enrico Caruso, the dancers Carmen Amaya and Antonio Gades, the musicians Arthur Rubinstein and Serguei Rachmáninov and other many personalities of high international importance of the 18th and 19th century have been showing their art in some of its halls.

Celebrated for its acoustics and architectural beauty, it is also the headquarters of the National Ballet of Cuba. It is here where the first choreographies of the Ballet are presented to the Cuban public which is very demanding with their dancers. Some of them have said that if the ballet is received by an overwhelming applause, then it will be a great hit in the world.

It welcomes as well the seasons of the Lyrical Centre Pro-art with its programs of operas, operettas, and concerts, as well as the Spanish Ballet of Havana and it harbours the Centre of Promotion of the Dance (Prodanza), it is also the headquarters of the International Festivals of Ballet of Havana and those of Lyrical Art, of the Practical Courses of the National School of Ballet, and many more.

It also has a space for a festival which is dear to all: the Huella de España (the Print of Spain) a festival held annually in Havana City which presents the Spanish roots of the Cuban culture and where many important Spanish personalities of the arts come to Havana and share their art, as well as participate in a convection where the roots of Cuba and Spain are presented and discussed.

This majestic building will catch your sight as soon as you are nearby it. Being able to be in one of the presentations of the Cuban Ballet is just a unique chance that you have during your holidays in the island. If you are not lucky and cannot see the ballet, you will be happy to see the beauty of this incredible building. Do not miss this opportunity.
