Low Cost Travel Insurance

By: Paul Stanley

Thousands of people with special needs travel, so how do they
find low cost travel insurance that fits the bill?

Frankly, it will never be simple as there will always be the potential for added expenses, but it doesn’t mean you need give up on travelling or on finding the best deal.

Online travel insurer, iTrek.com.au, focus on the 18 to 24 market and say they understand there are thousands of travellers in that range who have special needs or pre-existing conditions such as asthma or diabetes.

“The most important thing is to be really up front,” iTrek management advise. “In many cases, cover can be granted with medical approval and possible adjustments can be made to the premium. For example with asthma it could depend on the severity and time elapsed from the last severe attack.”

No one company will ever suit every traveller. You’ll need to shop around and compare low cost insurance quotes as some companies will be generalist and some may be set up with a more targeted focus. While purchase online is always a cheap option this is an area that could require you get on the phone and speak with the company’s call centre.

If you’re travelling in a wheel chair, contact the company to confirm their policy on replacement or repair if damaged or alternate travel arrangements if required.

Snow sports and kanskiing are just some of the sports open to wheelies. Always advise the insurer if you intend participating in sports of any kind. Many companies specify which sports are not covered under their standard policy but may be open to covering other sports under an increased rate. Either way, always tell the insurer and get their response so there are no misunderstandings at a later date.

Traveller’s should always be spot on with pre-existing medical conditions, as confusion in this area is one of the reasons behind a 200% plus rise in complaints to the Ombudsman. Read the policy to find out what is classified as a pre-existing condition, and if necessary contact the company to make sure you’re on the same page.

Car hire is often a preferred option as it can provide greater flexibility. Compare each policy on driving overseas and what the requirements, exclusions and possible claim excess will be.

You may never get rock-bottom low cost travel insurance but you can get the best possible deal by knowing exactly what your needs are and by shopping around.
