Rome hotels: advices and tips to book an accommodation in Rome

By: Paola

Rome is a big city. Very big. So the choice of the location in which you should book your Rome hotel or your apartment is more then relevant: it's pivotal. Because Rome is a chaotic city. Very chaotic. That's why in order to choose the perfect accommodation in Rome you should firstly decide the area of the city you'd like to spend more time in, otherwise the place you're going to spend more time in would be a bus, trying to get there!

Public transports in Rome are not so efficient as they should be, considering the number of tourists and citizens they're supposed to carry around everyday. The Metro, the local underground train, can be a good solution not to remain stuck in the traffic for ever, especially in rush hours. But unfortunately not every area of the city is covered by this service and even if plenty of main historical and artistic spots of the city have a metro station in the nearby, this nearby can be not as "near" as it sounds like. So let's discuss about the locations. Of course, if your not very budget-concerned, you should never go for an hotel in the Rome suburbs. Because, as long you're not in the Eternal City for working or personal other reasons, there's no way you would prefer to stay out of the charm of the Rome city centre or at more than one hour of distance by public transportation from it. If you just can't afford a centrally located hotel in Rome, nor even a bed & breakfast or a guest house, just make sure to have a metro station very close to your house, so that you will be able to get to the Spanish Steps, the very core of Rome, in about half an hour.

But if you can afford to lodge in the centre, then here comes the hardest thing: where, in the centre? The Vatican is kilometres away from the Colosseum, which is not at walking distance at all from Piazza Navona or Trastevere. All these areas are top locations, so that to select one or another there's nothing else but your taste to take under consideration.

Did you come to see the Pope? Well, then you already know the answer: the Vatican area, including the districts of Prati, Borgo Pio, Aurelio, Gregorio VII will be the best choice to enjoy the view of St. Peter's Basilica, The Vatican Museums and Castel Sant'Angelo on a daily base.

Are you into high fashion? Then Via Frattina, Via Condotti and all the little streets surrounding Piazza di Spagna would be the perfect place in which to look for Rome hotels in which having some rest from your crazy shopping.

Do you prefer a bohemian style or do you want to enjoy the best mix of both past and modern Rome? In this case apartments in Trastevere is what you're looking for, to be surrounded by artistry and true roman night life.

Campo de' Fiori, Piazza Navona, The Colosseum area, the Quartiere Monti and many other places in the Eternal City will be tremendous location in which to reserve an hotel room or an apartment, each and everyone of them having a different mood and lifestyle and its own sightseeing musts. But there's no way to talk here about all of them. Now you know you have to come to Rome prepared, knowing exactly what your preferences are. The choice is totally up to you: Rome is an ice cream shop with hundreds of different flavours and you necessarily have to pick one. But remember: you can come back as many times as you want!
