The Floridita: where the presence of Hemingway still floats in the air…

By: Jose Mauricio

Havana City was in the stage of the Republic a place for bohemian communities. Many people found in its streets refuge and love. But at the same time it was a city full with likely places. And today it is still that wonderful place to live and to visit. A charmed city which welcomes to all the people that visit it and never wants to say goodbye to them.

In the old part of the city the trade was developed a lot, it is for that reason that while you walk its streets during your vacation time, you can find all sorts of stores, restaurants and bars. Also, in this part of the old village you may come across many parks to rest after having walked a little, and beautiful squares full with people that wander around the streets of this city and discover its marvels.

Ernest Hemingway was one of these bohemian men that one day arrived in here and nicely, he had left its imprints. Here, there is his house, the property Vigía, the bar the Terrace (Bar Terraza) in the neighborhood of Cojimar and the bar restaurant the Floridita, in the beginning or the end of the Obispo Street, depending on what way you take to come.

This bar restaurant is considered as one of the seven more famous bars in the world. Here, Hemingway spent many of his afternoons and nights, already drinking the famous double daiquiri without sugar, the swig badge of the bar and of course it is the most requested by all the visitors, partly to know how the likes of Hemingway were, and partly to refresh of the enormous heat.

If you are a lover of seafood dishes, you will have them in one of the most formal and exclusive restaurants in the old city. A velvet curtain doorway leads you through from the famous bar to an elegant circular dining area punctuated by two central marble pillars.

The bar is known as the home of the daiquiri. The comfortable chairs, the flowery wallpaper and the velvet curtains make you feel like if you were in a posh living room, albeit one crammed with people at any time of the day. This bar has fifteen different ways of preparing the daiquiri, as well as other kinds of cocktails.

If you are a big fan of Hemingway’s books and personality, you will love to spend sometime here in this bar. If you are not, well, this is a chance that you have to get closer to this amazing writer that loved this island and wrote a huge part of his writings while he was living in Cuba. Anyways, being in the Old Havana is an experience already, but visiting this bar or the restaurant will be a moment you will enjoy even after having left the place. Come and have a great time in The Floridita, a place where the presence of Hemingway still floats in the air. You deserve only the best in your holidays.
