Visit Lovely Freeport, Maine

By: Angela Katsis

Freeport is a relatively new city founded in the late 18th century in the area near North Yarmouth. Freeport is one of the small towns of Maine but occupies an important place in its history and economy. Often called the birthplace of the state of Maine, it was freed from North Yarmouth on the fourth of July of 1889, the independence day of our country and Freeport as well.

Freeport, Maine is situated on the Atlantic Coast, which has allowed it to thrive on the fishing industry. In addition to fish and lobsters coming in from the cold Atlantic waters, the town has made a living building ships, which it still continues to this day. Be sure to visit the historic shipbuilders on your next trip to Freeport to see how ships were built in the “good old days.”

Travel to Freeport, Maine is quite east. It is just 20 miles from Portland and a two hours drive from Boston. If you wish to enjoy the beauty of the fall months of the Northeast and see the beautiful foliage, it is strongly recommended that you make the drive from Boston. Those of you, who wish to save time, take a flight to Portland and then make a drive from there. Freeport is hardly half an hour drive away from Portland.

Without a doubt, the most popular attraction in this beautiful Maine town is L.L. Bean. Long home to the incredibly durable outdoor outfitters, people come from near and far to visit the flagship store and factory. The flagship store boasts an indoor trout pond and rock climbing wall. Open 24 hours a day each and every day a year, make the trip to visit where it all began!

Maine is known for its great outdoor activities because of its natural beauty. You can enjoy Mother Nature at its best walking, hiking, or biking the trails and parks in or around the town. If you climb the Bradbury Mountain, you will see some incredible views of the surrounding area from its summit. Outdoor activities in Maine are especially enjoyable with the family. It is the best way to spend quality time together and the young ones can burn off some excess energy.

Wildlife lovers have great sights to watch and experience in Freeport. Bird watchers from all over the country and abroad come here to watch the vast and diverse variety of birds. Home to the Atlantic seals, Maine offers you to see the seals in their native environment if you plan to go on a seal boat tour. Also make a trip to the Sequin Island Lighthouse or Eagle Island.

For more encounters of the animal kind, schedule a visit to Wolfe’s Neck Farm. This fantastic 600 acre farm raises animals naturally without any hormones or antibiotics. A visit to Wolfe’s Neck Farm is a great way to see exactly how organic cattle and sheep grazing works and understand how eating this untreated meat is better for your body. In addition to learning about organic food, kids enjoy the farm to watch the sheep grazing in the lush fields.

Visit Freeport, Maine for a never before felt experience. It would be a great way to spend some quality time with your family and explore America, to boot.
